Milan would look to inaugurate the proposed new stadium in the area of San Donato Milanese at the beginning of the 2028-29 season if the project is to go ahead, the local mayor has said.

Francesco Squeri, the mayor of San Donato Milanese, spoke at a press conference on Thursday, following the approval of proposals from the municipal council on Wednesday night.

Milan had submitted their plans through SportLife City at the end of September.

The Rossoneri still need to gain the approval of several other institutions before any work can begin on a proposed new stadium.

Recent reports suggest that Milan would look to erect a 72,000-seater, two-tier stadium, as well as a 3,000 capacity venue for concerts and other events, plus several cafes, bars, restaurants and shopping outlets if plans were to go ahead.

Speaking at his press conference on Thursday, Squeri told the press: “A long and complicated road opens up for our city, which will involve multiple institutions. The citizens and various social elements will also be involved in this journey.”

He later continued: “We are aware, however, that for this to happen, we will have to explore various aspects and identify solutions for several factors such as infrastructure, local services and new opportunities so that this is an enhancing experience for our area.”
