Paris Saint-Germain secured a 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the first leg at Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, overcoming a 1-0 deficit with three unanswered goals.

While PSG showcased their quality, could manager Unai Emery also be partly to blame for the situation that allowed the capital club to turn things around? After Aston Villa took the lead, Desire Doue quickly leveled the score, sending the match to halftime at 1-1.

Doue’s goal seemed to set the tone for the second half. Early in the second half, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead, giving the home side a two-goal advantage.

It looked like the match would end 2-1, but Nuno Mendes sealed the win with a late goal, giving PSG a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into the second leg.

Was Aston Villa unlucky in the first leg loss?

After the loss, Aston Villa’s Matty Cash spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live and noted that the Premier League side was unlucky with the result in Paris.

“A tough night. We knew coming here it was going to be tough. They dominated Liverpool and they were unlucky to lose [the first leg]. I thought we defended the box really well, I thought at the end we were unfortunate and unlucky to concede. We have Villa Park next game – I think it will be a different game.”
