Manchester United could reportedly receive a major windfall due to former forward Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood thriving in France

Greenwood permanently left United last summer to join Ligue 1 giants Olympique de Marseille in a deal worth £26.5m.

His departure came after serious allegations, including attempted rape and assault, though all charges were later dropped in February 2023.

He enjoyed a superb maiden season in France, netting 22 goals and providing an additional six assists in 36 appearances across the top flight and Coupe de France.

The Englishman’s contributions saw Marseille attain a second-placed finish and qualify for the Champions League in the process.

His brilliant performances, coupled with Marseille’s recruitment of former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, have however cast doubts over Greenwood’s future at Stade Vélodrome. A report covered by The Peoples Person last month relayed that Atletico Madrid were considering a swoop for the Carrington academy graduate.

There have been claims of Saudi interest in Greenwood and now, Ben Jacobs has offered an update, revealing that Al-Nassr are planning a move for the forward. This could greatly benefit Manchester United, who hold a substantial 50% sell-on clause and would profit significantly from the deal.

Saudi move on the cards for Greenwood

Jacobs wrote on X, “Al-Nassr made a recent enquiry on Marseille striker Mason Greenwood.”

“Marseille don’t want to sell, and now unclear if Al-Nassr will persist or whether Greenwood is open to Saudi.”

“Any sale, now or in future windows, hands Manchester United a 50% sell-on.”

talkSPORT further note that Al-Nassr would need to fork out north of £85m to even convince Marseille to come to the negotiating table.

If Marseille secure a sale worth £85m, United would be entitled to half of that amount, pocketing an additional £42.5m from the transaction. This windfall would almost certainly be added to Ruben Amorim’s summer transfer budget.

If added to the original fee United earned 12 months ago, it would mean the club will have received a total sum of £69m for the 23-year-old.
