According to a report from in today’s L’Équipe paper, Marseille’s largest ultra group – South Winners – are set to pay their respects to the late Pope Francis during this Sunday’s Ligue 1 match against Stade Brestois. The pontiff came to Marseille in 2023, when the Winners produced a tifo at the request of the Arch Bishop of Marseille which was shown during a visit from the Pontiff at a mass at the Vélodrome stadium. “His vision of Marseille was also ours, magnificently summed up in his now famous phrase: “I’m coming to Marseille, not to France,” announced the ultra group in a communiqué.This comes in the same week that Roberto De Zerbi, the Olympique de Marseille squad and club president Pablo Longoria are expected to pay a visit to the Vatican to pay their respects to the late Pope Francis. Les Olympiens have been training in the north-west of the eternal city this week in a bid to resurrect their hopes for Champions League football by the end of the Ligue 1 season. Marseille are currently in the first week of what could be a two to three week camp in the Italian capital to get away from the oftentimes ‘toxic’ environment of OM’s training ground. Les Phocéens return to Marseille on Saturday ahead of facing Stade Brestois at the Vélodrome on Sunday evening (20:45 CET). Whilst second in the league table, crisis was always seemingly ready to engulf the club after a losing run which put at risk OM’s UCL qualification hopes. They do, however, now sit one point ahead of Monaco, two ahead of LOSC, and three ahead of Nice and Lyon.GFFN | George Boxall
