Striker Marko Arnautovic is hoping to make an impact at Inter Milan after playing a bit-part role the first time around.
Speaking to Austrian news outlet LAOLA1, via FCInterNews, the 34-year-old gave his thoughts on his return to the Nerazzurri.
This summer, Arnautovic came back at Inter, thirteen years after the end of his first stint at the club.
During the first go around, the Austrian was at the Nerazzurri for an incredibly successful period. Inter won the European Treble during the 2009-10 season, which Arnautovic spent on loan with the club.
However, the role that Arnautovic himself played in that triumph was minimal.
As the player himself admits, he was as much a “fan” as he was a player in terms of his role in that team.
In the more than a decade since then, however, Arnautovic has established himself elsewhere. The 34-year-old has enjoyed successful spells at clubs like Werder Bremen, Stoke City, West Ham United, and Bologna.
Now, Arnautovic returns to Inter a much different player than he was when he last left.
And the Austrian wants to show that he can be a key player in future successes rather than just sitting on the sidelines.
“It’s very emotional for me,” Arnautovic said of coming back to Inter.
“I can only praise Inter, it’s simply the club where I started. I’ve returned after thirteen years, but now I’m here to play and to help the team.”
Arnautovic noted that compared to his first spell at Inter, “The training ground has changed, in a positive way. And the stadium is the same as ever, it still looks the same.”
“I already got the feeling that I was returning home,” the striker noted. “But at the same time it was a new feeling for me.”
“There are still five or six people who I found here from my first time,” Arnautovic noted. “A couple people in the media department, a kit manager, and Javier Zanetti who’s now a director.”
“And then, everything else is new. But I smile every day when I’m here playing for this team.”
Arnautovic noted that he won the 2010 Treble with Inter, but only “As a fan!”
“If we could repeat that, I would obviously be very happy,” Arnautovic joked.
“We’ll see what happens,” the 34-year-old continued. “Of course I can’t predict what will happen this season. But Inter’s goal is obviously to win titles every season.”
“I think we have a very good, young team. We’re ready for anything.”
