Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood turns down Lazio transfer | OneFootball

Manchester United star Mason Greenwood has reportedly turned down the chance to join Serie A giants Lazio.

Greenwood has been heavily linked to Lazio, who were even mentioned to have tabled an opening bid for him. This offer was rebuffed by United as it did not meet their valuation of the player.

It was stated that Lazio – who were thought to be Greenwood’s preferred transfer destination – were preparing a second and improved bid to try and convince United to play ball and let him move to Italy.

However, the possibility of this transfer getting over the line was plunged into uncertainty after Lazio president Claudio Lotito recently remarked that he’s lining up a swoop for an unnamed attacker who is “ten times better than Greenwood.”

Lotito’s comments led to speculation that Le Aquile’s pursuit of the Carrington academy graduate may have turned sour.

A fresh report from Foot Mercato has now claimed that Greenwood rejected Lazio as he’s more keen on a switch to Ligue 1 outfit Marseille instead.

According to the news outlet, “With the lead to Lazio having taken a hit, OM now has all the cards in hand to try to snatch Mason Greenwood, who is very excited about the idea of ​​playing in Marseille. All that remains is to find the right formula with a very greedy Manchester United team who is demanding €40 million to permanently give up their left winger.”

“The player seems to be moving away from the Roman club. According to our information, the 22-year-old English left-winger is not very keen on the idea of ​​joining Lazio and is favouring the path leading to that of OM.”

“The field therefore now seems clear for the Marseille board which intends to do everything possible to offer Roberto De Zerbi a name in European football, in full possession of his means and who has a strong margin for improvement.”

Foot Mercato add that Marseille are aware of the great opportunity they have to land Greenwood and as a result, they’re “getting active” and have “started concrete discussions” for the 22-year-old.

The Ligue 1 outfit are optimistic that the operation will be successfully finalised soon enough.

Foot Mercato also note that United may have to be flexible on their valuation of Greenwood as €40 million may be a bit too much for Marseille.

Earlier on Monday, Fabrizio Romano divulged that Marseille sent a formal bid to the Red Devils for Greenwood.

Greenwood is also being pursued by La Liga’s Valencia.
