A recent report from SPORT suggests that a managerial shift at Manchester United could bring some positive news for Barcelona, as it might mean the end of the English club’s pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.
For the past few seasons, United’s former manager, Erik Ten Hag, had made de Jong a top transfer target, keeping his sights set on the talented Dutch midfielder.
Many expected United to renew their attempts to sign de Jong. However, with the change in United’s management, their transfer priorities could take a new direction, which may benefit Barcelona’s efforts to retain de Jong.
De Jong, who is under contract with Barcelona until 2026, will soon face decisions about his future. While there was anticipation around a possible transfer move, Barcelona are also keen to negotiate a contract extension with him.
The club is eager to secure his commitment, as his current contract expires on June 30 next season, making the upcoming summer window crucial for either a contract renewal or transfer.

Over the past two summers, rumours about de Jong’s potential move to Manchester United have circulated widely, largely due to Ten Hag’s close connection with the player from their time together at Ajax.
Interestingly, United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, seems to be shifting away from Ten Hag’s transfer approach. The Portuguese is reportedly more interested in other options, with his first target being Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish striker currently impressing at Sporting.
Amorim’s arrival could signal a more strategic and selective approach to United’s recruitment, which likely won’t include a high-profile pursuit of de Jong.
This development could work in Barcelona’s favour, as de Jong has expressed a strong desire to remain at the club. Under Hansi Flick, de Jong is confident about his future and is determined to prove his worth on the field.
With United potentially moving on from their pursuit, Barcelona’s hopes of keeping de Jong for the long term appear more promising.
