Manchester United are undergoing widespread job cuts as part of the club’s overhaul in its first summer under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.

Since becoming minority owners of the club, INEOS have led a massive transformation at United, revamping the leadership structure completely.

Among the high-profile appointments introduced by Ratcliffe and his team are new CEO Omar Berrada, who has made it his business to engage with fans and make his presence known in a positive change from what has been the norm under the Glazers.

Dan Ashworth is another major appointment, with the club luring him away from Newcastle United to become the new sporting director.

But while there may be an array of new appointments under Ratcliffe, many are at risk of seeing their United careers come crashing down.

The Athletic revealed that United are set to undergo some major job cuts.

“Aside from the football department, there is turbulence among United’s rank-and-file staff, with Ratcliffe wanting the 1,000-plus list of club employees reduced by a quarter. That means around 250 people losing their jobs — cuts which have triggered understandable anguish,” the report read.

What’s more, the publication revealed that the team dedicated to taking care of the Glazer siblings and their families has also been reduced in size, suggesting that dismissals are already underway.

Noteworthy is the transformation to United’s executive leadership team under INEOS, which is now comprised of just chief operating officer Collette Roche and chief commercial development officer James Holroyd.

As the article explained, arguments in favour of and against the job cuts have emerged.

In favour of job cuts are those who believe that inadequate staff members must be dismissed after years of mismanagement. There’s also the fact that the club’s payroll will be significantly reduced, which will surely be good for cash flow.

Still, there are already concerns emerging about how the club’s operations are being disrupted due to a reduction in staff numbers.

Due to the lower number of staff at the ticket office, wait times for the customer helpline are longer while the Manchester United Supporters Trust has already expressed its concern about the new digital ticketing system because barcodes are buried deep in the club’s mobile app.

During the pre-season tour of the US, defender Jonny Evans gave his insight into the ongoing overhaul. “It’s been hard to see. The new owners feel that’s the direction that they want to go. But it’s not been easy for everyone at the same time.”

While the mood at the club may be negatively affected by this transformation, the mismanagement of the club prior to INEOS’ arrival is undeniable.

In the eyes of those in favour of mass job cuts, it may be best to institute change as quickly as possible, no matter how severe, so as to put the club back on the right track leading to a better future.
