Magpies goalkeeper Will Anderson recorded an impressive clean sheet at the Carrington Centre, producing a series of strong stops while Irish teenager Kyle Fitzgerald made his debut for Newcastle's under-18s after joining the club from hometown club Galway United.

Gabriele Biancheri looked to have sent the Red Devils ahead as Victor Musa's initial strike was parried into the Welshman's path but, despite stroking the rebound home, the goal was disallowed after straying into an offside position.

Kacey Wooster, who signed a full-time scholarship with the Magpies last summer, was unable to break the deadlock after racing onto Fraser Harper's defence-splitting pass but placed his effort wide of the right-hand post.

In the second half, Anderson kept the scoreline on level terms after pushing away Jim Thwaites' free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.

Michael Mills, who joined United's youth set-up from Port Vale last summer, won possession inside his own half and raced towards goal but the 15-year-old forward was challenged by Jaydon Kamason before directing a shot at goal.

Anderson denied Thwaites in excellent fashion as the 16-year-old shot-stopper tipped the midfielder's teasing first time effort from the edge of the box over the crossbar.

The Newcastle 'keeper's best save of the afternoon arguably came in the closing stages after pushing Amir Ibragimov's header from point-blank range over the bar as the contest ended in a stalemate.
