Manchester United’s visit to St James’ Park this weekend will be shaped by a significant change between the posts. Altay Bayindir is in line to make his Premier League debut as Andre Onana pays the price for his costly midweek errors in the 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon. Ruben Amorim, managing his squad amid mounting pressure, has taken decisive action, dropping Onana after a week of damning criticism.

The Cameroonian was culpable for both Lyon goals, prompting former United midfielder Nemanja Matic to brand him “one of the worst keepers in United’s history.” It was a statement that reverberated through Carrington—and now, Amorim’s team sheet reflects that judgement.
Manchester United remain hamstrung by a concerning injury list. Matthijs de Ligt, Amad Diallo, Jonny Evans, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez and Toby Collyer are all unavailable for the trip to Newcastle. Despite these absences, Amorim is unlikely to shuffle the deck too much, seeking balance between risk and necessity.
Victor Lindelof, who has twice replaced Harry Maguire off the bench this week, may earn a starting role alongside Yoro in defence, with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui expected to provide width.
Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount are both in contention to freshen United’s forward line. Mount’s inclusion would offer creativity behind the in-form Alejandro Garnacho, while Zirkzee could lead the line as Amorim looks to break down an improving Newcastle side.
Kobbie Mainoo is back in the squad and should add bite in midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte and the ever-present Bruno Fernandes, who has clocked a staggering 4,078 of a possible 4,470 minutes this season. Amorim addressed the possibility of resting his captain but remained firm in his commitment to fielding a competitive side.
“Of course, I’m going to be careful with some players, but we need to be competitive,” Amorim said. “When you are playing for Manchester United, you cannot go to the game thinking about the next one. We have to face Newcastle with a team that we can be competitive, and to win the game.”
Manchester United’s predicted XI to face Newcastle: Bayindir; Mazraoui, Lindelof, Yoro; Dalot, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mount, Garnacho; Zirkzee.
