Manchester United’s summer business is ramping up with INEOS starting work on transforming Ruben Amorim’s first team squad for the upcoming season.
The signing of Matheus Cunha is expected to be the first of a raft of incomings at Old Trafford who are desperate to add goals to their misfiring front line.
As reported by The Athletic, a trio of attacking stars are high on Amorim’s wish list after missing out on central striker Liam Delap.
Viktor Gyokeres remains of huge interest to the United head coach who helped the Swede to become one of the most feared strikers in Europe during their time at Sporting CP.
The 26-year-old would provide an immediate upgrade to Rasmus Hojlund, who has struggled badly this season, but the signing is likely to depend on the funds INEOS can raise through player sales.
Gyokeres is a wanted man but would surely relish the chance to link up with his old boss who would build the front line around him and give him the best chance to succeed at the Theatre of Dreams.
Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo has enjoyed a fine season in the Premier League and is another on the shortlist to bolster Amorim’s attacking armoury.
Semenyno showed his class right under Amorim’s nose at the Vitality Stadium in April, lashing home the opener which was eventually cancelled out by a last gasp Hojlund equaliser and providing a huge threat throughout the 90 minutes.
No doubt the pace and power of the forward would be welcomed in United’s ranks but any deal will cost them north of £50 million, with the South Coast club holding the cards with regards to the players contract and no real need to sell for financial reason.
Then comes Victor Osimhen, a proven goal scorer whose pedigree outweighs the aforementioned duo and is about as close to a guarantee of goals that you can get in the current market.
Wages have been reported as the major stumbling block to a deal but after missing out on Delap the report claims a “reevaluation” could be on the cards for the big Nigerian.
Osimhen is almost certain to leave parent club Napoli after enjoying a fine season in Turkey with Galatasaray, firing them to the Super Lig title and if United can find a way to tempt him to Manchester, he would be the blockbuster signing of the summer.
After their paltry goal return of 44 in the league last season, the lack of cutting edge at the top of the pitch needs to be addressed as a priority in the market.
Whilst United will have to decide which of the trio they choose to join Cunha and the widely expected Bryan Mbeumo, it’s clear INEOS will not send Amorim into his first full season in charge without the relevant tools required to help bridge the gap back to the top end of the Premier League table.
