Ashley Young has said Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim will have no ‘excuses’ after a full pre-season with the squad this summer.

Amorim endured a difficult start to his reign with the club last season, after replacing Erik ten Hag in November.

United ended the campaign 15th in the Premier League table, the club’s lowest league finish since last being relegated in 1974. The Red Devils also scored just 44 league goals, with only Everton netting fewer among the sides to avoid relegation.

Young sympathised with Amorim for inheriting a struggling side mid-season, but said a full summer to implement his formation and style means he will have no excuses when the new season gets underway next month.

“I think Ruben Amorim has his way and his style of coaching, his tactics, and the way he wants to set up his team,” Young said to Sky Sports.

“I think we’ve seen he didn’t want to come in at the time that he did. He wanted to come in at the start of a season. It was going to be tough either way when you come in halfway through a season, I’m sure any managers will say it’s a tough ask.

“When you’re joining the biggest club in the world, where they were at, it was going to be even harder.

“It’s been said that you’re going to have to give him time, he needs time, and how many transfer windows… who knows? But you’ve got to set your mark up and put a stamp down as soon as you start this season.

“I don’t think that anyone can give him any more excuses. It’s now or never to be honest. He’s got to have a good pre-season with the team, work out what his best team is, work out what players fit into the system.

“Unless he’s going to change his system, but you can’t see him changing the formation he’s been playing. It’s going to be intriguing to see what happens after this pre-season.”
