Manchester United are ramping up their efforts to strengthen their midfield this summer.
United have spent over a month negotiating with Brentford for the transfer of Bryan Mbeumo. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Red Devils are optimistic of securing a deal for Mbeumo “in the next days.”
The Cameroon international, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season, is likely to become United’s second major addition in attack after Matheus Cunha.
Ruben Amorim also needs a new striker to spearhead his attack, but a report in Italy suggests Ineos have intensified their search for a midfielder.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, AS Roma are keen to sign Richard Rios from Palmeiras but they face strong competition from United.
The 25-year-old Colombian is considered one of the most exciting talents in South America. Most recently, he earned plaudits for his performance in the Club World Cup, registering two assists.
Rios plays as a defensive midfielder. Apart from his defensive contributions, the technically proficient Colombian likes to make a difference at the opposite end of the pitch with his dribbling and passing.
The Italian newspaper claim Roma sporting director Frederic Massara recently held talks with Palmeiras, offering €25 million for Rios.
However, the Brazilian outfit are not willing to part ways with their flamboyant midfielder for less than €30m.
Palmeiras’ tough stance is believed to be partly influenced by United’s approach. It is reported the Premier League giants have “swooped in on the player in the last few hours.”
It is added that United are looking to sign Rios due to Casemiro’s inconsistent performances.
The 33-year-old had a mixed 2024/25 campaign and is unlikely to play an important role under Amorim moving forward because of a sharp physical decline.
The Brazilian veteran’s lack of composure with the ball at his feet have also frequently come back to bite United.
