Red Devils set to benefit from wisely inserting clause into a deal with Benfica last summer

The Red Devils have already bolstered their squad this summer with the arrival of Matheus Cunha, but are seeking further reinforcements across the forward line and Mbeumo is a primary target for head coach Ruben Amorim.

However, United have failed with two offers for the Cameroon international as Brentford stand firm on their asking price - a fee in excess of £63m.

That said, Standard Sport have reported that whilst the Bees and Mbeumo have grown frustrated by the slow progress of negotiations with Man Utd, a deal is still expected to be finalised.

As Man United prepare to return to the negotiation table for the 25-year-old, they can use Alvaro Carreras’ move to Real Madrid to potentially help fund a third bid to finally get a deal over the line.

According to the Mirror, United are set to bank around £7.2m due to inserting a 20 per cent sell-on clause when selling Carreras to Benfica last summer. The left-back has since moved to the Santiago Bernabeu for a fee believed to be in the region of £43m.

A statement reads: “Real Madrid C.F. and Sport Lisboa e Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Alvaro Carreras, who will be under contract with our club for the next six seasons, until 30 June 2031.

“Alvaro Carreras came up through the Real Madrid youth academy, where he played between 2017 and 2020 in the youth categories.

“He joined Benfica from Manchester United after being named the English club's best under-23 player of the 2021-22 season. As a Benfica player, he won this year's Portuguese League Cup.”

This is the second time Man Utd have benefitted from a sell-on clause this summer. In fact, just last week they banked around £6m from Anthony Elanga’s £55m move to Newcastle.

The Athletic have reported that United and Brentford are still several million pounds apart in their valuation over Mbeumo, so perhaps the recent £13m windfall will play a big role.
