It has been a hugely frustrating campaign for United, who sacked Erik ten Hag earlier in the season and sit 14th in the Premier League, only two points above West Ham in 17th.

The season now rests entirely on the Europa League, with United facing Athletic Club in the semi-finals next month.

Plans are already being put in place for the summer and it is reported that a new goalkeeper is a key priority, as Andre Onana’s struggles continue.

According to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, Porto’s Diego Costa is the preferred option and United have sent scouts to watch the 25-year-old in recent weeks.

It is claimed that Porto could be open to selling Costa, but not before this summer’s Club World Cup. The club would also demand the goalkeeper’s £64.3m release clause was paid in full.

United could face competition from Manchester City, who are also keen on Costa as a potential replacement for Ederson.

Amorim wants to strengthen in attack as well and United are said to be closing in on an agreement to sign Wolves star Matheus Cunha.

The United boss is a keen admirer of Cunha and spoke to the forward in the Old Trafford tunnel on Sunday after Wolves came away with a shock 1-0 win.

While Newcastle have also been linked with the 25-year-old, the Daily Mail report that United are in pole position to sign Cunha, who has been persuaded by the opportunity to play a key role in a revamped squad.

Cunha has a £62.5m release clause after he signed a new contract at Wolves in February.
