Erik ten Hag made eight changes to the side that won 3-0 at Southampton in the Premier League at the weekend and was rewarded with another very strong display from his team.

Antony also found the net to give United back-to-back victories for the first time this season ahead of their top-flight trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Rashford got the goals underway by dancing through the Barnsley defence to dispatch a well-taken finish past Tykes goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina before turning provider for the second.

The England international played in Antony, who took contact from the Chelsea loanee to earn a penalty, which he duly converted.

Garnacho then grabbed a third on the stroke of half-time, prodding home after good work yet again from Rashford.

The second half saw Barnsley make a triple substitution in a bid to stop the bleeding at Old Trafford, but the goals quickly resumed with Garnacho grabbing his second and his side’s fourth.

The Argentine had the freedom of the left wing and slotted coolly past the helpless Slonina.

United had one of their first comfortable evenings of the season with Manuel Ugarte impressing on his first start for the club following a £50.5million summer move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Rashford then doubled his tally with a smart finish to score the fifth for the Red Devils, who had just too much quality for League One Barnsley.

Eriksen ensured the home side didn’t let up though, scoring twice late on to complete a rout for United - who racked up their biggest win to date under Ten Hag and largest ever in the League Cup.

The Dane’s first saw him start and finish a great move, prodding home with ease after being played through by Bruno Fernandes.

Eriksen then hit a sublime shot for his second after good work from Joshua Zirkzee and Fernandes in the build-up.
