Manchester City have struggled in all competitions this season after being dominant in the last few seasons. Pep Guardiola’s side are competing to finish within the top four at the end of the season so that they can play in the UEFA Champions League next season. They aren’t short of money and, hence would look to revamp their squad in the summer transfer window to get back on track next season.
City need to sign quality midfielders as one of their best players, Kevin de Bruyne, is set to leave Etihad in the summer. Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes have had below-par performances this season, and hence, the club need quality in their midfield, which is so vital to Pep Guardiola’s tactics.
According to a report from the Italian outlet Calciomercato, Pep Guardiola wants Manchester City to sign Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan in the summer. The Dutch midfielder has been an integral part of the Serie A side and has performed really well for the club. He would definitely be a good addition to the midfield of Manchester City.
Reijnders has scored 9 goals in 30 matches so far in the Serie A 2024/2025 season. 6 of the 9 goals were scored at home, while he scored 3 goals at away games. Overall, the Dutchman’s goals scored per 90 minutes is 0.32. Moreover, Reijnders’s total G/A (goals + assists) is 12 for this season. His goal involvement equates to 0.43 per 90 minutes, and his non-penalty xG per 90 minutes is 0.36 (as of April 9, 2025).
The AC Milan star is a midfielder who oozes class—technical, dynamic, and intelligent. The 25-year-old combines smooth dribbling with precise passing, making him a perfect fit for Manchester City’s possession-heavy style. He is versatile in midfield, where he can dictate tempo, break lines, or press relentlessly. Pep Guardiola thrives on players with vision and work rate, and Reijnders has both in spades.
If City sign him this summer, he would fill the vacancy left by Kevin De Bruyne, adding fresh legs and creativity. His knack for threading passes could unlock defenses, keeping City’s machine purring at the top. The Dutchman is currently in his best form and would want to play for an elite Premier League side like Manchester City. Playing under Pep Guardiola will also help him to grow and have a crack at winning consistent trophies in his career. It remains to be seen if City can complete the move.
