Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City goalkeeping structure have welcomed a new face into their first-team set-up over the course of the weekend.
City have significantly overhauled their goalkeeping department this summer following the acquisitions of James Trafford from Burnley and Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea, with Scott Carson leaving the club at the end of his contract.
With less than 12 months remaining on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, Ederson’s future has been thrown into doubt amid strong interest from Galatasaray, who presented an official €10 million bid to Manchester City for the 31-year-old at the weekend.
Stefan Ortega Moreno is expected to complete a permanent move away from Manchester City in the final weeks of the transfer window, with Trafford set to battle Ederson for the number one goalkeeping position after returning to boyhood side following two seasons at Burnley.
Ederson remained out of Manchester City’s travelling squad for their Premier League opener against Wolves, with Trafford keeping a clean sheet in his first senior appearance for the Blues as new arrivals Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki all impressed.
City do not wish to sell Ederson but would be open to sanctioning a deal for a fee in the region of €35 million, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma identified as an ideal replacement for the Brazil international.
Donnarumma is believed to have agreed personal terms to join Manchester City in the final weeks of the transfer window but a transfer is contingent on Ederson being allowed to complete his desired move to Turkey.
Guardiola cited stomach problems and illness as the reasons for doubt over Ederson’s involvement in the buildup to the win over Wolves, with Trafford expected to retain his place between the sticks for Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League meeting with Tottenham as Ederson’s future reaches a resolution.
Following Ederson’s absence from Manchester City’s matchday squad against Wolves, the Blues issued a golden opportunity to 18-year-old academy goalkeeper Jack Wint to participate in first-team training and matchday action over the weekend.
Having trained with the squad towards the end of last week and furthermore on Sunday afternoon, the Cheadle-born talent was also integrated into the matchday squad at Molineux on Saturday evening alongside James Trafford and Stefan Ortega.
Galatasaray are expected to return to the negotiating table for Ederson with an improved offer but it remains unlikely that an offer will be made in the vicinity of Manchester City’s desired €35 million mark, with the six-time Premier League winner into the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
Meanwhile, Donnarumma is very keen on joining forces with Guardiola after an ugly falling-out with Paris Saint-Germain over a contract dispute just over three months on from spearheading the French giants to their maiden UEFA Champions League title.
