Man City’s injury list shrank considerably ahead of Saturday’s visit to Goodison Park

Manchester City’s injury list gained no new entries as Pep Guardiola’s men battled to a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

It took City until the 84th minute to break down the stubborn, swashbuckling Toffees, with 20-year-old midfielder Nico O’Reilly eventually making the difference before Mateo Kovacic struck in injury time to confirm the result.

Saturday’s tie actually brought positive fitness news as Manuel Akanji returned to the squad for the first time since February’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid. He made a brief cameo, replacing Kevin de Bruyne in the 88th minute.

Alongside Akanji on the bench was Phil Foden, who sustained a foot injury earlier this month in a goalless Manchester Derby, though he did not appear in the match.

Still unavailable is Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson, who suffered a groin injury in last weekend’s five-goal rout of Crystal Palace. He was well deputised by Germany’s Stefan Ortega, who made two saves as he kept a clean sheet.

No updates have been offered as to the condition of star striker Erling Haaland, who sustained an ankle injury under an awkward tackle from Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook.

Ahead of the Everton match, though, Guardiola was asked for updates on John Stones and Nathan Ake. He said neither man was close to a return, but that they were both steadily improving.

He said: “ Not yet. Getting better but not yet.”

Despite having been knocked out of all cup competitions, City’s relentless schedule is still complicating player recovery. They will have just two days of rest before they return to action on Tuesday as they host Aston Villa.
