The representatives of globally-renowned goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma have reportedly been approaching some of Europe’s top clubs as his future grows uncertain.

While PSG continue to reshape their squad this summer, one of the standout storylines emerging is the uncertainty surrounding Donnarumma’s long-term position in the French capital. Despite being a mainstay since arriving from AC Milan in 2021, the Italian shot-stopper is now believed to be open to a move.

Manchester City’s inclusion among the suitors comes at a delicate moment for Etihad Stadium officials. Uncertainty over Ederson’s future persists, with ongoing interest from Galatasaray, while back-up Stefan Ortega Moreno has been linked with clubs seeking a No.1 role.

City have already made moves in the goalkeeper market – remaining interested in Burnley’s James Trafford over a return to the club – but the availability of a truly world-class operator like Donnarumma could alter their transfer strategy significantly.

At 26, Donnarumma boasts the rare combination of vast top-level experience and long-term upside. A former European Championship winner with Italy and now a Champions League title to his name, the goalkeeper would represent an elite-level successor should City opt to sell Ederson in the near future. However, wage demands and PSG’s asking price could present complications, especially given City’s strict internal salary structure.

Now, according to the information of TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey, Manchester City engaged in talks when approached about a potential deal with Gianluigi Donnarumma – a player PSG do not want to lose for free in 12 months time when his contract expires.

With PSG making moves in the market and searching for a capable replacement for the Italian, Donnarumma’s representatives have been doing their own due diligence on a potential new club – where he would expect to become the highest paid in his position in the world.

Alongside talks with City, the report further reveals that Galatasaray were first to make their move this summer, prepared to put him on level terms with fellow new signing Victor Osimhen when it comes to salary.

Chelsea are also said to have been approached by Donnarumma’s camp, while AC Milan are open to bringing their former shot-stopper back to Italy, and Bayern Munich are also keeping abreast of the situation.

For Manchester City, the timing of this development could be significant. With Ederson’s contract expiring in 2026 and the player now entering his eighth season at the Etihad Stadium, senior figures may view the 2025 summer window as a natural point of transition.

Manchester City had previously been linked with FC Porto’s Diogo Costa as a possible heir to the No.1 shirt, but Gianluigi Donnarumma’s experience and availability bring a different dimension.

Crucially, any serious attempt to bring in the Italian would require a major decision on the club’s wage hierarchy. Donnarumma is seeking terms that would eclipse any current goalkeeper salary worldwide – a level which would surpass even what Ederson currently earns.

While City have the financial power to make such a deal happen, their recruitment policy tends to be tightly aligned with squad harmony and long-term planning.

Whether this is simply an opportunity being tested by Donnarumma’s agents or a genuine shift in City’s priorities remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Manchester City are monitoring the elite end of the market, although James Trafford still remains the more likely solution to ongoing dilemmas.
