Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso has confirmed goalkeeper David De Gea will remain with the Serie A side beyond this season, poking fun at Manchester United's decision to part ways with the Spaniard.
United opted to move on from De Gea in the summer of 2023 as then-manager Erik ten Hag secured a reunion with former Ajax stopper Andre Onana. Nemanja Matic, De Gea's ex-teammate, recently described United's current goalkeeper as "one the worst in Man Utd history".
Frustrations towards Onana's form have sparked rumours of a summer reunion with De Gea for United, who are reported to be exploring a move to bring the 34-year-old back to Old Trafford this summer.
Fiorentina, however, have the option to trigger a contract extension for De Gea and president Commisso has now suggested that option has already been taken.
"I saw a great De Gea, he's a champion and you can see it," he told RAI after the Conference League triumph over NK Celje. "They sent him away and we took him.
"He's staying with us. He is still young enough to spend a few years with us."
Goalkeeper is expected to be a position of concern for United and head coach Ruben Amorim this summer. Alongside doubts over Onana's long-term future in the side, backup option Altay Bayindir is expected to push for an exit over his lack of minutes and third-choice Tom Heaton could depart upon the expiration of his contract.
Brighton & Hove Albion stopper Bart Verbruggen has been linked, while the likes of Lille's Lucas Chevalier, Espanyol's Joan Garcia and Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp are among those touted as possible targets.
