Manchester United have announced that they have parted with Erik ten Hag as their manager following a disappointing start to 2024-25, with their 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham United yesterday proving to be the final straw.

According to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, the Red Devils have put Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge of the team on an interim basis, and they have confirmed the news on their official website, with the former striker set to be in the dugout when they take on Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before hosting Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

The performances and results of Man United were simply not good enough under Ten Hag, and it would not have surprised many fans that the club finally decided that enough is enough.

He won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the two and a half years he spent in charge of the team, but they never looked like a club capable of challenging for the Premier League at any point in time.

The Dutchman was backed in the transfer market, spending around £200 million on players during the last summer window, but no significant improvements have been noticed since he arrived.

Man United will now look to get their next appointment right having sacked every manager they hired since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, and van Nistelrooy will look to impress in the few games he will oversee over the next couple of days.

German manager Thomas Tuchel would likely have been appointed immediately as the successor to Ten Hag had he not taken the England job earlier this month, and the former Chelsea boss could now be left wishing he had waited a little bit more before his latest decision.
