Manchester United might be falling behind in the race for Sporting CP bomber Viktor Gyokeres after a chaotic day in the office.
The Red Devils have recently emerged as the favourites to land the 27-year-old free-scoring striker who is apparently intrigued by the prospect of reuniting with Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
The Premier League giants were hoping to pounce on a reported gentleman’s agreement between Gyokeres’ entourage and Sporting that would allow the player to leave for €60 million plus another €10 million in add-ons.
Nevertheless, the president of the Portuguese club, Frederico Varandas, denied the reported figures on Wednesday, claiming he only agreed to sell the Swede for less than the value of the release clause, which is set at €100 million, but his suitors will definitely have to fork out offers larger than €70 million.
This certainly came as a blow for Man Utd who are operating on a limited transfer kitty this summer after missing out on Champions League football.
To make matters even worse for the Red Devils, Arsenal have reportedly stepped up their interest in Gyokeres.
According to CNN Portugal, the Gunners have held talks with the player’s agent on Wednesday as they look to overtake Man Utd in the race for one of the most coveted centre-forwards on the planet.

Like United, Arsenal have been searching the market for a centre-forward. Hence, the two clubs’ plans have become entangled, as they have been following several common profiles, including Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike.
Nevertheless, Gyokeres remains a cut above the rest after netting a whopping 54 goals in 52 appearances this season, so it is no surprise to see the two Premier League giants battling it out for his services.
But sadly for Man Utd, their rivals’ healthier finances could see them miss out on the Sweden international.
