Man Utd 3-2 Burnley: Red Devils rescued by late penalty

Manchester United got their first win of the season against Burnley thanks to a 97th minute Bruno Fernandes penalty.

The game had a must win feeling after the disastrous result against Grimsby on Wednesday night, and, while not in the prettiest manner, Amorim’s side got the job done. Whether this result relieves any of the pressure is yet to be seen.

Manchester United found a deserved opener through an own goal for the second week running. However, similar to last week, United’s second half performance let down a positive opening 45 minutes.

Lyle Foster was left unmarked to equalise for Burnley in the 55th minute, before Bryan Mbeumo put The Red Devils back in front just 16 seconds after the restart. But less than ten minutes later, Burnley equalised again thanks to Anthony.

The game looked to be heading towards a 2-2 draw, until Anthony unnecessarily pulled at Diallo’s shirt in the box. Bruno Fernandes did what he couldn’t last week and converted from the spot to win the game.

Ruben Amorim’s job may have been rescued heading into the international break, but the performance will likely still leave United fans concerned about the teams future under the Portuguese manager.

As It Happened

Manchester United took the lead through a Josh Cullen own goal. A wide free kick from Bruno Fernandes found Casemiro, whose header hit the crossbar, but the ball then ricocheted off Cullen and over the goal line.

Deep into added time Manchester United should have been 2-0 up. After an effective three-on-two counter-attack, Bryan Mbeumo squared it to Amad Diallo for a tap-in, but the Ivorian somehow missed the goal entirely.

After a dismal first half display, Burnley equalised just ten minutes into the second half. Jacob Bruun Larsen delivered a great cross to find an unmarked Lyle Foster to score with Burnley’s first shot on target.

United retook the lead just 16 seconds after the restart. Diogo Dalot cut the ball back to Mbeumo to score his first ever goal for the club.

It was almost three goals in three minutes. Quilindschy Hartman found Foster behind the defence and he took it around Altay Bayındır to score, but the flag quickly went up. Following a VAR check, it was deemed Foster’s sleeve denied him another goal.

Six minutes later, Burnley got an equaliser that would stand. Bayındır parried Lesley Ugochukwu’s shot straight to Jaidon Anthony, whose shot pinballed off Mainoo and Bayındır into the net.

Scott Parker moved his side into a back five in the final ten minutes as Manchester United pushed for a winner. This was an important game for Amorim after the loss midweek and tensions around Old Trafford were rising as the game ticked closer to full time.

Amorim’s job appeared to be slipping away until Anthony pulled Diallo’s shirt, bringing down the Ivorian in the box. Sam Barrott reviewed his decision at the monitor and awarded Manchester United a penalty. Bruno Fernandes put the ball just out of reach of Martin Dúbravka and won the game for United.
