Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho has been called up by Lionel Scaloni to the Argentina national team ahead of their upcoming friendly games and the Copa America tournament.

Garnacho has taken huge strides this season in his club career and has been one of Erik ten Hag’s most trusted lieutenants during a troublesome season.

The 19-year-old made 36 appearances in the just-concluded Premier 2023/24 campaign. In that period, he managed an impressive seven goals and four assists.

Across all competitions, Garnacho has played 45 games and has nine goals and five assists to his name.

He made his 37th consecutive start for the Red Devils on Sunday, in their 2-0 win against Brighton and Hove Albion. It’ll likely be 38 when United make their way to Wembley to take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final this weekend.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Garnacho had an international dilemma on his hands.

It was stated that his wish was to link up with the senior Argentina squad and take part in the Copa America. However, a section of the country’s football chiefs and members of Scaloni’s backroom staff were of the opinion that he could wait and that the United star would be best served by being included in the U23s to participate in the Olympic games.

There was also an option of having him play in both competitions but considering the sheer number of games he’s played for United this term, that option was highly unlikely.

A subsequent report then divulged that Garnacho had a big chance of receiving a senior Argentina call-up.

This has now happened and the Carrington academy graduate has been named in the Albiceleste’s provisional squad for Copa América.

He has been included in a pool of attackers also consisting of Julian Alvarez (Manchester City), Lautaro Martinez (Inter Milan), Nicolas Gonzalez (Fiorentina), Angel Correa (Atletico Madrid), Lionel Messi (Inter Miami), Valentin Carboni (AC Monza) and Angel Di Maria (Benfica).

It’s important to note that the list is not final, as three players will be removed before the final Copa America squad is selected.

Argentina have friendly clashes against Ecuador and Guatemala on 10th and 14th June respectively before they kick off their Copa America campaign by facing Canada on 21 June.
