Manchester United have reportedly placed themselves in a position to swoop in for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, if he is interested in joining Ruben Amorim’s ranks.
It’s no secret that United are actively searching for a reliable striker following another challenging season for Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish forward has struggled to meet the expectations of a United frontman, and his future at the club now looks increasingly uncertain.
United are believed to be open to selling Hojlund, who has drawn interest from clubs in Italy. Should he leave, the 22-year-old would undoubtedly need to be replaced. Even if he were to stay, it’s clear that United still require reinforcements up front.
Some of the names that continue to be linked to the Red Devils include Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting CP), Liam Delap (Ipswich Town) and of course, Mateta.
However, with United missing out on European football next season following their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, their options in the transfer market have significantly narrowed, potentially forcing them to compromise slightly on quality.
A recent report covered by The Peoples Person noted that United have a B list of striker targets, which features Mateta’s name.
The Frenchman has been prolific again this term, notching an impressive 14 goals and two assists in 36 Premier League appearances.
He was crucial for Palace as they beat Manchester City in the FA CUp final to secure their spot in next term’s Europa League. It was the first major piece of silverware in the Eagles’ history.
According to L’Equipe, United are among the clubs that have “already positioned themselves” to secure Mateta’s signature. It’s understood that the 27-year-old is considering his options, with a view to breaking into the France national team.
L’Equipe reveal, “For Jean-Philippe Mateta, choosing his next club will be crucial. The striker still dreams of joining the French national team and competing in the 2026 World Cup with the team.”
“He knows that his choice—stay or leave—will have significant consequences in giving Didier Deschamps more leverage to secure a call-up.”
“Mateta will wait and see what concrete avenues emerge in the coming weeks before making his choice. A return to France is not entirely out of the question.”
Palace are thought to value Mateta at a whooping £50 million.
