Manchester City star Mary Fowler will be out for an extended time after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The Australian picked up the injury during Sunday's FA Cup derby day defeat at home to Manchester United, having been withdrawn in the 24th minute.
Fowler's ACL injury is likely to keep her out until some point next season with players usually taking nine months to recover depending on the severity.
The news is a big blow to Nick Cushing and Manchester City, who have a difficult season in the league and see their hopes of getting into the top three diminishing.
Fowler has been one of the Citizen's best players this season, having scored 10 goals and assisted 10 more in 33 games this season.
The 22-year-old is one of at least 15 WSL players to pick up an ACL injury this season, with women's football particularly affected by those types of injuries.
