Manchester City may have staged a sensational comeback against Crystal Palace with a 5-2 win, but Pep Guardiola’s injury list continues to grow — and it’s starting to look like a concern at the business end of the season. With the title race, Champions League spots, and Club World Cup all still in play, the physical state of key players such as Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Ederson is of more than passing interest.
The Brazilian keeper, so often the quiet instigator of City’s build-up play, delivered a sublime assist before limping off with what appeared to be a groin issue in the second half against Palace. Guardiola was non-committal after the match, saying: “He made the pass and said he felt something and he couldn’t continue.”

It’s not Ederson’s first flirtation with discomfort in recent months. Guardiola admitted the problem had resurfaced: “He’s had some discomfort in the last month, two months ago, and it’s come back today.” No return date has been confirmed, meaning Stefan Ortega may be called upon again — a reliable presence, but a drop-off in terms of distribution.
Phil Foden, who was electric in the Manchester derby the previous week, missed the Palace match entirely after picking up an ankle injury. The issue stems from a heavy challenge at Old Trafford, and while not thought to be serious, it’s one that has proven difficult to shake.
“He had an injury at Old Trafford and he didn’t recover well,” Guardiola confirmed, hinting at a cautious approach. The hope is Foden will return for City’s next fixture away to Everton, scheduled for Saturday, 19 April — a match that could prove pivotal in the title race. Given his recent form and influence, City fans will be praying for positive news.
Erling Haaland remains sidelined after sustaining an ankle injury against Bournemouth. Leaving the pitch at the Vitality Stadium in a protective boot sparked immediate concern, and subsequent scans confirmed the need for a prolonged rest.
Guardiola, ever careful not to overpromise, offered a timeframe: “They told me the doctors say between five to seven weeks. So hopefully the end of the season and by the Club World Cup he will be ready.” While the Norwegian’s absence is being managed, his sheer presence up front — both as a goal threat and focal point — is sorely missed.

In Haaland’s absence, City have found goals through other channels, but the striker’s clinical edge, especially in big matches, is irreplaceable. His return will be timed meticulously, not just for domestic ambitions, but also with the Club World Cup in mind.
Elsewhere, Guardiola’s defensive core continues to be hit hard. John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji are all unavailable, having each suffered injuries during City’s European run.

As for Rodri, his ACL injury — sustained back in September — has kept him out for months. He has returned to individual training, but Guardiola has emphasised caution: “Don’t do a wrong decision right now and make a step back.”
Guardiola added: “The injury, the doctors said seven months, eight months. [We’ve] arrived at six months so he’s behaving on the pitch really well already. But competition is completely different.” While a return in time for the Club World Cup remains the goal, City will not risk further setbacks with their midfield metronome.
Manchester City’s squad depth has been their saving grace, but even the most well-stocked teams start to feel the pressure when key players are ruled out for weeks at a time. With Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both central to Guardiola’s attacking philosophy, and Ederson an integral part of build-up play, their swift and full recovery could prove decisive.
Everton awaits next, and while the Toffees may not pose the same threat as Europe’s elite, Guardiola will know that every point — and every player — matters as City chase history once again.
