Manchester City secured derby bragging rights as they ran out 3-1 winners over Manchester United at home on Sunday afternoon.

Despite starting on the front foot, United drew first blood, Marcus Rashford thumping home a 25-yard effort. It was the 12th time City have fallen behind in a Premier League game this season; only in 2019-20 (13) had they done so more in a single campaign under Pep Guardiola – the last campaign in which they did not win the title.

Phil Foden equalised before the hour mark — it was City’s 600th at the Etihad under manager Pep Guardiola (across all competitions) — ensuring a grandstand finish he settled himself.

“He doesn’t get the accolades of [Erling] Haaland or [Kevin] De Bruyne. But they must start coming soon,” Gary Neville asserted on Sky Sports commentary.

Haaland had a quiet afternoon but got on the scoresheet in stoppage time. The result meant Man Utd’s streak of 143 consecutive Premier League matches winning after leading at half-time ended.

Nathan Aké – 6 – Inadvertently played a role in the build-up to United’s opener as he kept Fernandes onside. He did make amends through several attacking displays.

Rúben Dias – 7 – Reliable whenever United broke free to attack City’s goal.

John Stones – 7.5 – Another solid outing from the Barnsley Beckenbauer, who often found himself playing in United’s half than his own.

Kyle Walker – 6 – Marauding as ever, though Walker couldn’t register a fourth assist of this campaign.

Bernardo Silva – 7.5 – Made four interceptions while creating no fewer than a game-high seven goalscoring opportunities.

Rodri – 8.5 – The glue that holds everything together. Aside from imperiously retaining and recycling possession, he twice got himself into the assist column.

Jérémy Doku – 5.5 – Has yet to convince in these glamour ties. United weren’t too bothered about the ball going out wide to him, with Ten Hag’s side more concerned about staying narrow and keeping the space tight centrally.

Kevin De Bruyne – 7 – Unexpectedly, he was the one City looked towards. De Bruyne has enjoyed better outings despite creating six chances.

Phil Foden – 9 – He was constantly involved as City enjoyed large swathes of possession and levelled proceedings before netting the winner. On another day, Foden would have taken the match ball home.

Erling Haaland – 7 – Seldom in the game before sensationally missing from mere yards out minutes before half-time. He did get his compulsory Manchester derby goal in stoppage time.

Julián Álvarez (for Doku 59) – 6 – Straight into the action and provided the ball for Foden’s winner.

Oscar Bobb (for Foden 90+7) – N/A – A late sub.

Man Utd

André Onana – 6.5 – Easily his best performance in a Man Utd jersey. He made four saves before conceding three inside the final 35 minutes.

Victor Lindelöf – 5 – No stranger to playing at left-back, the Swedish centre-back enjoyed a pivotal battle with Foden down City’s right flank, indeed the hosts equaliser came through Foden cutting inside Lindelof before unleashing a corker into the top corner.

Jonny Evans – 5.5 – A first start for Man Utd since matchday 21 with Harry Maguire sidelined, before ending his game in the 68th minute Evans held up well but it’s fair to say his best days are behind him.

Raphaël Varane – 6 – Used every fibre of his big match experience and produced crucial interventions.

Diogo Dalot – 5 – This was a more understandable subdued performance from United’s oft-attacking full-back.

Scott McTominay – 5.5 – Brought in to bolster Man Utd’s midfield and handed the task of sitting back and containing City’s attack, McTominay though would find himself threatening Ederson’s goal.

Casemiro – 6 – Won nine of his 13 duels in a congested midfield. United were still overawed.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6.5 – Started his first Manchester derby, and truth be told Mainoo, who turns 19 next month, gave a real good account of himself, especially in duels with the esteemed De Bruyne.

Alejandro Garnacho – 5 – Understandably played on the periphery as United was in containment mode and relied on counter-attacks where he’d come in handy. But they were too few and far between.

Bruno Fernandes – 6 – Made his 150th Premier League appearance in this match. He marked the occasion by laying the ball to Rashford for his stunning opener. It was his first assist against City in the Premier League since doing so in his first Manchester derby in March 2020. He failed to provide an assist against City in his last seven appearances.

Marcus Rashford – 7 – Produced a stunning effort from a distance to break the deadlock. “He said in the week, if you back me ‘good’, if you doubt me ‘better’,” Gary Neville exlamined on Sky Sports commentary. “But that is the best way to answer your critics! Smash one into the top of the net from 25 yards!”

Only Wayne Rooney (eight) and Eric Cantona (seven) have scored more Premier League goals for Man Utd against Man City than him (five).
