Manchester United staged a late comeback to secure a 2-1 victory at Premier League champions and ‘noisy neighbours’ Manchester City this evening.
Rubem Amorim’s team and supporters now enjoy bragging rights following the 195th encounter between City and United. Amad Diallo played a crucial role in their success.
Diallo won a penalty in the 88th minute, which Bruno Fernandes successfully converted, and just moments later scored the game-winner. Joško Gvardiol had given a struggling City the lead, but this defeat marks their eighth in 11 matches across all competitions, increasing the pressure on Pep Guardiola.
United achieved a much-needed victory after experiencing back-to-back league defeats under Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag last month. Although this result does not move them out of the bottom half of the table, it could serve as a springboard for their improvement.
Ederson: 62%
Ederson showcased impressive passing accuracy (80%) and long ball completion percentage (58.82). He earned a respectable score despite conceding two goals and making one save. His positioning for Diallo’s winning goal, though, could be questioned.
Josko Gvardiol: 61%
He scored the opening goal while making three crucial interceptions that helped City regain possession. However, winning half of his aerial battles limited his final rating.
Rúben Dias: 54%
Dias’ ball retention skills are commendable, yet the previously reliable centre-back faced challenges in aerial situations, winning only 25% of his duels. Additionally, he ranked in the 20th percentile among Premier League central defenders playing today for ball recoveries and possession won in the defensive third.
Kyle Walker: 53%
The main topic of discussion regarding his performance was his acting during a confrontation with Holjund before halftime. In terms of his overall play, Walker is not the player he once was, as evidenced by his failure to create any chances and only winning half of his attempted take-ons.
Bernardo Silva: 56%
Silva, positioned on the right flank for most of the match, successfully executed only one of his three attempted take-ons, failing to register any shots on goal or generate scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Ilkay Gündogan: 63%
Playing as City’s deepest midfielder, Gündogan excelled at retaining and recycling possession, achieving an impressive 92.75% retention rate, although this was offset by a modest 50% win rate in ground duels.
Matheus Nunes: 44%
A reckless challenge on Diallo changed the course of the game. Playing in an unfamiliar left-back role did not help. Nunes’s erratic display was further amplified by being dribbled past three times and failing to create a single chance.
Phil Foden: 58%
No City player registered more shots on goal than Foden, though just one of his four efforts hit the target. He also created two scoring opportunities, but neither was considered a ‘big chance.’
Kevin De Bruyne: 65%
The much revered Belgian playmaker had a decent outing, yet it fell short of his usual high standards. His forward passing accuracy of only 70% underscores this point. Additionally, he concluded the match without generating any chances, and only one of his attempted shots on goal was on target.
Jérémy Doku: 67%
Attempting 11 take-ons is one thing, but completing only four is another. At least Doku was active down that City left flank; however, the forward was let down by a lack of end product for his manager’s sake.
Erling Haaland: 44%
Once again, the Norwegian striker appeared to be absent from the game. Haaland hardly tested Onana in the Manchester United goal (one shot off target yielded a 0.14 xG score), while managing only 21 touches, which was fewer than any other starter, surpassing only Jack Grealish (12) and Savinho (6), who both entered late in the match.
André Onana: 56%
Overall a solid day’s work. Onana saved two of City’s three shots on target but the reigning champions were far from their threatening best (0.91 xG overall). He completed four long passes at a relatively sub-par accuracy of 31%. You could argue the United goalkeeper looked a bit lost for Gvardiol’s headed opener as City’s set-piece routine had its intended effect of disorienting him.
Lisandro Martínez: 67%
Martinez’s long-range passes — of which he completed a team-high six today — were a huge asset to Man United. Rasmus Hojlund perhaps could have won a penalty off the back of one in the 64th minute. But it was Martinez’s line-breaking pass in the 90th minute that set up Diallo’s match-winner.
Harry Maguire: 63%
Maguire was outstanding in cuttting out passes today, recording five interceptions. That’s the most of any Premier League player this gameweek. He also made three clearances but lost two of his four aerial duels. This would have been a higher rating if not for making one error that led to a Man City shot.
Matthijs de Ligt: 67%
De Ligt made three interceptions and won four of the five aerial duels he contested. He also completed three long balls.
Diogo Dalot: 55%
Dalot’s respectable score reflects the fact he didn’t do much wrong. Some would argue he didn’t do much at all, however. United’s left-sided wing-back failed to complete any crosses or win any tackles, though he did make one interception.
Kobbie Mainoo: 54%
Mainoo replaced Mount early on as injury forced Amorim to reshuffle his midfield. Mainoo was strong from a ball-winning perspective, recovering possession for United three times in the middle third and twice in the defensive third. However, his retention rate was poor (76%), he made just three accurate forward passes and was dispossesed three times, the most of any United player.
Manuel Ugarte: 64%
This was a strong display from Man United’s defensive midfielder. His passing accuracy was 95%, while he won seven duels and made two interceptions, one of which came inside United’s box. As Fernandes’ told Sky Sports post-match: “Manu [Ugarte] was outstanding today — for me today, Manu was unstoppable.”
Noussair Mazraoui: 57%
Overall he won three tackles, the most of any United player, and two aerial duels. His score was pegged back by the three challenges he lost, allowing City players to dribble past him. That will happen when you’re up against Doku, though many will say Mazraoui won this individual battle overall — especially in the 74th minute when he dispossessed the Belgian winger at the byline and carried the ball upfield in the build-up to Fernandes’ big chance.
Bruno Fernandes: 72%
Fernades started the game in centre-midfield but moved forward when Mount came off injured. Those who feel United should move on from their captain were 10 minutes away from the sort of game that might support their view. After 73 minutes he missed a big chance to put United level, timing his run for Hojulind’s through-ball beautifully before his dinked finish drifted wide. But Fernandes expertly converted a high-pressure penalty to equalise in the 89th minute. He also created the most chances of the match (3) and won two tackles (2).
Rasmus Højlund: 43%
This was an unfortunate game for Hojlund, who could have won a penalty for a challenge from Dias’ challenge and perhaps should have earned an assist for the Fernandes chance. But neither of those things happened and Hojlund recorded no shots on target, 0 xG and touched the ball just once inside City’s penalty area.
Amad Diallo: 82%
The player of the match. Diallo completed a game-high five take-ons against City, even bettering Doku. The 10 touches he took in the opponent’s box were also the most of the match. He put a couple of those to good use by winning Man United a late penalty, his smart feint baiting the Nunes challenge that left Pep Guardiola visibly dismayed. Diallo then of course scored a 90th minute match-winner. Additionally, he won one tackle and made two ‘high turnovers’, claiming possession for United within striking distance of City’s goal. His 14 passes completed in the final third was the most of any United player.
Squawka’s new player rating system is wholly stats-based. Player scores are based on the numbers they put up across a range of on-ball events, from goals scored to tackles won.
We tailored each score to the players’ respective positions using extensive research and expertise. For example, forwards are rated on metrics like shots on target, touches in the opposition box, and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes, etc.
