Following the sale of Carlton Morris, Luton Town must ensure they keep hold of Millenic Alli amid significant Championship interest.
Having suffered back-to-back relegations from the Premier League down to League One, Luton Town are embarking upon an unusual summer whereby they will believe they have a squad capable of challenging for promotion in the Championship set to ply its trade in the third-tier instead.
The Hatters appeared to have climbed their way to safety with some big performances and victories before the end of the campaign, but instead they suffered a 5-2 loss at The Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion to drop below Hull City on the final day of the season and into the bottom three.
Matt Bloomfield, who had Wycombe Wanderers vying for top spot alongside last season’s League One points tally record-breakers Birmingham City before his mid-January move to Kenilworth Road, will believe he is the right man to take a strong squad straight back to the Championship.
However, Luton’s imperative now must be keeping that strong squad intact after the departure of Carlton Morris to Derby County already this summer, and one man who should be kept at all costs is Millenic Alli, amid interest from both Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United.
As Luton prepare to return to the third-tier, there will be a bit of uncertainty and debate over what formation manager Bloomfield will choose to go with, having stuck with the club’s back three towards the back end of last season.
However, at Wycombe, Bloomfield’s Chairboys thrived in a 4-2-3-1 system with an abundance of attacking options, and the beauty of Alli is the fact that, regardless of a 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1 or a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, he fits perfectly into Bloomfield’s style.
Perfect for transition football and playing fast and direct on the counter-attack, as often shown at both FC Halifax Town and Exeter City, Alli’s technical ability also marks him out as a likely supreme creator in League One next season, too.
Having enjoyed a rapid rise from non-league football to the second-tier in 12 months, Alli showed he was more than capable of being a threat in the Championship with Luton in the second-half of last season, hence the interest from teams in the division above.
However, if Luton are to remain an ambitious outfit, then the side, alongside a couple of others such as Thelo Aasgaard, should be built around Alli, especially with a view to him forming a crucial part of what they will hope is a promotion challenge back to the Premier League in the 2026/27 season, too.
As well as the fact that Luton will want to build the next few years around players such as Alli, it is also now imperative Luton keep hold of the versatile Dublin-born attacker in the aftermath of the sale of Morris.
Morris had been a stalwart for the last few years, and spearheaded Luton’s ascension to the top-flight, but the 29-year-old has now departed, and a new era can begin.
When starting a new era, it is not only key to lay down a marker but also establish fundamental parts of it, and Alli simply has to be one for Bloomfield.
Whilst big offers may arrive and there is Championship interest from clubs expecting to challenge for promotion this season, it is key for the Hatters to ensure Alli remains a part of their side next season – and, if he does, the quality he possesses should see Luton propel themselves straight back into the second-tier.
