Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has returned to training with the rest of the squad as he nears a return to fitness from his latest injury setback.

Shaw has hardly played over the past year, having suffered a hamstring injury when United faced Luton Town in the Premier League last February. He had recovered sufficiently by the summer to feature for England in the latter stages of Euro 2024, only for a calf problem to leave him sidelined again.

The left-back was eventually able to make three substitute appearances in the first week of Ruben Amorim's reign as head coach, before another devastating fitness blow in early December.

Now, Shaw is closing in on another comeback. He was part of group training on Wednesday morning ahead of this week's Europa League matchday eight clash with FCSB.

An actual return to playing may take a little bit more time. Shaw was not included in the travelling squad that departed for Romania several hours later, with Amorim previously suggesting that the player will need two weeks of training to get back up to speed before being considered for selection.

In Shaw's absence, right-back Diogo Dalot has been the primary option used on the left. Tyrell Malacia has returned from his own long-term injury absence in recent weeks and could even finish the winter transfer window elsewhere after reportedly being offered to Real Betis on loan.

United have been working on recruiting a new left-back and look close to landing 20-year-old Denmark international Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. Personal terms with the player and a transfer fee with Lecce, £25.1m rising to £29.3m, have been agreed and the deal is now hinging on a medical and completion of the paperwork before Monday's transfer deadline.
