Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique insists he does not believe Arsenal were the better team in their Champions League semi-final tie.

This is despite Gunners boss Mikel Arteta claiming right after the game that that’s what the PSG bench told him after the final whistle.

Arsenal are now destined to finish trophyless again this season after losing 3-1 on aggregate to PSG in the Champions League semi-finals.

Arteta was clearly proud of how his team played, claiming afterwards that he felt they dominated, and that the PSG staff acknowledged that as well.

See below for Arteta’s quotes on what he claims PSG were telling him, as per Fabrizio Romano…

? Arteta: “The best team lost, in my view… especially after 160 minutes”. “I’m saying that and they [PSG bench] are saying that because they just told me”. pic.twitter.com/LH0KawkBp3 — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) May 7, 2025

Arteta might not be being entirely honest here, though, as Enrique certainly didn’t seem to share that view when he spoke.

Luis Enrique denies what Mikel Arteta said about Arsenal

“Mikel Arteta is a great friend, but I don’t agree at all,” Enrique said, as per BBC Sport.

“They played in a clever way and they got the match to the right moment for them because they played in the way they wanted, and the way they love. But in the two legs we scored more than them and that is the most important thing in football.

“Arsenal played a great match, and we suffered, but we deserved to get to the final.

“They are a great team, but I repeat, we scored more goals, we played in a great way in the first leg, and the second half of the second leg was a different match, and we could have scored even more goals.”

What do the stats say about PSG vs Arsenal?

Arteta might have been misleading about what PSG were saying, but the stats would appear to back up his claims about how well Arsenal played.

At the Parc des Princes last night, AFC had more possession, more shots, and a higher xG than their opponents.

Of course there were ways Arsenal could have done better, but the main issue over both legs was their finishing, so signing a new striker in the summer has to be an urgent priority for the north London giants.
