Something deeply emotional has come from Luis Diaz just as Liverpool kicked off their first pre-season match in Yokohama.

The Colombian forward, who has now left the club to join Bayern Munich in a £65.5 million deal, has issued his first public statement since leaving Merseyside — and his message is one that will stay with us for a long time.

Taking to Instagram just as we began our match in Japan, Diaz said goodbye to Liverpool in a way only someone who truly understood the club could.

“Three-years-and-a-half that I’ll treasure forever. I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,” he wrote.

The 27-year-old, who played 50 times for us last season and lifted the Premier League title under Arne Slot, thanked team-mates, coaches and the fans — calling us “extraordinary” and labelling Liverpool a “special team”.

But perhaps the most poignant part of his farewell was the tribute he paid to his close friend and former teammate.

“It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of ours in such a tragic way,” he said.

“As I said, and I repeat, I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him.”

Signed from Porto in January 2022, Diaz became a key part of Liverpool’s modern era.

He won the League Cup, FA Cup and most recently the Premier League, scoring 17 goals last season and often stepping up when we needed him most.

Although Slot preferred Cody Gakpo on the left at times, the Colombian gave everything for us — and now begins a new chapter in the Bundesliga with Bayern.

There had been growing talk that his minutes could be reduced this season with Hugo Ekitike arriving and Liverpool potentially chasing a new No.9 this summer.

But despite the speculation, the emotion in his goodbye is a reminder of what he gave us — and what we’ve lost.

As Liverpool continue preparations for the new season, many will hope that the money from Diaz’s sale can be used to secure Alexander Isak’s transfer to Anfield.

There are more changes to come, but Diaz’s words today are a powerful sign of what we’ve built — and what we’ll carry forward with us.
