After Luka Modric, Real Madrid part ways with another club legend this summer as Lucas Vazquez has officially departed from the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Merengues held a farewell ceremony in honour of the 34-year-old right-back today, where club president Florentino Perez paid tribute to the icon, hailing him as an example of what a Real Madrid player should be like.
In what was an emotionally charged event, attended by his family as well as his now-former teammates Kylian Mbappe and Andriy Lunin, Vazquez took the stage to formally bid goodbye to his boyhood club.
“This is one of the most important days of my life,” Lucas began, going on to thank his family and the fans.
“Thank you for every applause and every gesture of support, you have made me feel at home. Today it’s time to say goodbye, but I will never say goodbye to my Real Madrid.”
Stating what it meant to play for Real Madrid, the 34-year-old, who won 23 trophies at the club, noted:
“I have had the privilege of sharing a dressing room with legends and winning titles, but above all I have been happy. I have felt valued, respected and loved.”
Vazquez then proceeded to thank club president Florentino Perez, CEO Jose Angel Sanchez, and his family members, saying:
“To the president, thank you for allowing me to fulfil my dream. To Jose Angel Sanchez, thank you for giving your all in the negotiations.
“To my parents, since I am a father I understand even more everything you did for me. To you, Mateo, my brother, thank you for passing on your love of football to me, without you I would not be a footballer, I have fulfilled the dream of both of us.”
The Spanish defender then expressed his gratitude to his wife, Macarena, saying: “And to you, Maca, you gave me peace of mind and support to keep believing in me. We have laughed and cried together.
“You are the person who knows me best and also the one who has put up with me the most, being my best partner in life. I will never be able to thank you for everything you have done for me.
“You have given me my children, who are my greatest pride, I hope that one day you will understand what it has meant for your father to wear this shirt.”
Concluding, Vazquez said: “I have fulfilled my dream. I’m leaving but Madrid will always be mine. I am and will always be Lucas Vazquez, canterano of Real Madrid.”
Thank you Lucas!
