The Blades' new boss beat them convincingly while with the Tigers last season.

Ruben Selles has been appointed Sheffield United boss following the sacking of Chris Wilder.

Just over a month on from losing his job at relegation-battling Hull City, the Spaniard now holds the reins at a club that were in the Premier League two seasons ago, and almost got back their last term.

When he heard about the opportunity, Selles said: "It was a no-brainer for us to join a club with this kind of history and with a mission to move forward and try to be even more competitive."

He took charge of a game against his new club last season, not all that long after the new owners took over. The Tigers came away from Bramall Lane with a surprise 3-0 victory against Wilder's side who, at the time, were very much in with a chance to win automatic promotion to the top flight.

It was the only time United's new owners, COH Sports, would've seen their new boss live and in action, and it certainly would have left a lasting impression on the Americans.

Ruben Selles earned the Sheffield United job on merit

Selles' new job wasn't earned purely by way of this result, though, according to Lee Hendrie. While it may have helped his case, the Sky Sports pundit believes that the 42-year-old's work with Hull, and his time with Reading prior to that, is what got him the position at Bramall Lane.

"I don't think it's got anything to do with the result," Hendrie exclusively said to Football League World on the influence of the March fixture on the decision the Blades' ownership made.

"I think it's just his personality style and what he's done to progress, really, and they see lots of key elements that can take them up next season. So I wouldn't put it down to Hull's 3-0 win at Sheffield United last season.

"Obviously, it would have helped, but I think they look at the bigger picture of it all, and that's why he's been appointed. They see him as a successor to take over from Chris.

"So, no, nothing to the result. I just think he's got lots of potential and he's been targeted and talked about and has been for quite some time; that's why they've appoint him."

Hull City's 3-0 win over Sheffield United didn't show the best parts of a Ruben Selles team

It'd be astonishing if COH Sports elected to go with Selles because of that one game, because Hull weren't particularly good. They got a bit of luck with a poor offside call that could have seen the Blades level the game at 1-1 had the linesman not raised his flag. Wilder's side were a bit wasteful and Selles' players took the few half-chances they had.

The one thing that may have stuck with the Americans was that the loss prevented them from going to the top of the table, but they had led the league at other points in the season, so that moment wasn't hugely significant.

With Selles they will get high-energy, pressing football. That wasn't on display that much on that evening at Bramall Lane.
