The Reds have been without a permanent manager since February, when they sacked Matt Beard.

They finished the season with Amber Whitley as their interim manager, finishing seventh in the Women’s Super League table.

It has been a tough summer for the Reds who lost star player Olivia Smith for a world record fee of £1 million to Arsenal. Taylor Hinds also made the move to Arsenal but as a free agent.

However, the Liverpool squad now know who will coach them into the 2025-26 season.

There is a lot of excitement for the new domestic season after England’s success at Euro 2025.

The Lionesses are also second-favourites with betting sites to win Euro 2029.

What Gareth Taylor said after becoming the new head coach of Liverpool

In his first interview as new Liverpool Women head coach, Gareth Taylor said he was ‘delighted’ to be appointed for the role.

Taylor has been out of work since he was sacked by Manchester City back in March.

He won the FA Cup and Women’s League Cup during his time in Manchester, but narrowly fell short of winning the Women’s Super League.

Taylor said: “Everyone in football knows about the history, size and potential of this club, and I am really looking forward to the task ahead.

“Our aim is to create a team that supporters can be proud of, which plays good football and which will hopefully bring success along the way.”

Why did Liverpool choose to appoint Gareth Taylor as their new head coach?

Explaining the decision to appoint Gareth Taylor, Liverpool Women managing director Andy O’Boyle described him as the ‘outstanding candidate’ for the role.

Taylor was first linked with Liverpool last month, however there had been delays in the process of appointing him.

O’Boyle said: “This has been a very detailed process and it was clear that Gareth was the outstanding candidate. He has a proven track record of building successful, identity-driven teams. His ability to develop players and help them reach the next level is second to none.

“We have a very clear vision of how we will return LFC Women to the upper echelons of the game and this is a crucial step on that journey.

“We want our team playing with a clear identity as a Liverpool team, playing Liverpool football in front of passionate Liverpool fans. Gareth shares that vision and we believe he has the qualities and experience to deliver it.”

When does the 2025-26 season start for Liverpool?

Gareth Taylor’s first Women’s Super League match at the helm of Liverpool will be the Merseyside Derby on Sunday, September 7th.

The Reds also play Leicester City, Aston Villa and Manchester United during the opening month of the season.

Taylor’s first match on the dugout could be their pre-season friendly with Aston Villa on Saturday.

They also face Durham and Manchester United before the season gets underway next month.
