Liverpool, unbeaten in their last 20 Premier League matches, will put their run on the line at Anfield against Wolves on Sunday at 2pm.
Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister; Salah, Diaz, Gakpo
Wolves (3-4-3): Sa; Doherty, Gomes, Agbadou; Semedo, Andre, Bellegarde, Ait Nouri; Sarabia, Guedes, Cunha
The Reds sit seven points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table. In their previous match against rivals Everton, they were seconds away from another victory, but James Tarkowski scored a dramatic equaliser in added time, resulting in a 2-2 draw in the last Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park. Despite the draw, Liverpool extended their unbeaten run to 20 games.
Wolves, on the other hand, secured a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa in their last league match, ending a five-match winless streak. They currently occupy 17th place with 19 points, just two points above the relegation zone with 14 matches remaining.
In their last Premier League encounter, Liverpool defeated Wolves 2-1 at Molineux Stadium in September. Ibrahima Konaté opened the scoring for the Reds in the 47th minute, followed by a goal from Mohamed Salah. Rayan Aït-Nouri scored the only goal for Wolves in the 56th minute.
Liverpool has had the upper hand over Wolves in their recent meetings, winning four consecutive matches since March 2023. During this period, the Reds have outscored Wolves 9-2.
Mohamed Salah has been crucial to Liverpool’s success this season, leading the team as the top scorer with 22 goals—more than any other player in the league for the 2024/25 season. For Wolves, Matheus Cunha has been the most prolific player, scoring 11 times.
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo is a doubt after suffering an injury during the draw against Everton. Additionally, Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton remain unavailable, and Curtis Jones is suspended following his red card after the final whistle at Goodison Park.
Head coach Arne Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also sent off in the aftermath of Wednesday’s game; however, any potential ban for either of them is unlikely to be enforced in time for Sunday’s match.
On a more positive note, Trent Alexander-Arnold has recovered from a knee injury and played in the closing stages of Wednesday’s match, making him a potential starter against Wolves.
Wolves will be without Hwan Hee-chan, who was forced off with a hamstring injury against Blackburn last weekend. Fellow forward Jorgen Strand Larsen is close to returning from a similar issue, though this match may come too soon for him.
Meanwhile, new signings Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi are available to make their Premier League debuts.
Cody Gakpo is doubtful for the upcoming match, but if he is declared fit, the Dutchman has the opportunity to make Liverpool history. The former PSV Eindhoven forward has scored in each of his last six Premier League starts at Anfield, totalling seven goals.
Only three Liverpool players have scored in seven or more consecutive home starts in the Premier League: Fernando Torres in May 2008 (eight goals), Luis Suárez in January 2014 (eight goals), and Mohamed Salah twice (seven goals in April 2018 and eight in May 2023).
Gakpo’s improvement illustrates how manager Arne Slot has enhanced this Liverpool team without relying on the transfer market. Like other players, including Luis Diaz and Ryan Gravenberch, Gakpo initially struggled to adapt to life at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.
A significant part of Gakpo’s transformation into a key player has been his switch to the left wing. While he often played in that position at PSV Eindhoven, Klopp preferred to utilise him elsewhere.
It was seven months ago, after Klopp left Liverpool and Gakpo participated in Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, that the 25-year-old began to rediscover his form.
“At the Euros, I played as a left winger again. Then this season, when the new manager came in, I had a conversation with him, and he said, ‘You need to focus on the left winger position—this is where you’ll play when you come on or when you start,'” Gakpo shared earlier this season.
“He mentioned that there’s a lot of competition here, so I just have to showcase my abilities. But he made it clear that this will be my position.
“It felt a bit like the old me, similar to what I did at PSV. I feel really comfortable in this position. I try to demonstrate my capabilities to everyone.
“I think I’m encountering more one-on-ones now with my face toward the opponent, allowing me to either cut inside to shoot or cross, or go wide to deliver a cross. This is more my style of play, and I believe I can be really dangerous and help the team the most.”
Gakpo has emerged as a clutch player for Liverpool. As the team faces a challenging period with four games in ten days, his contributions will be more crucial than ever if Liverpool aims to succeed in all competitions.
