Daniel Yanez scored the only goal in the third minute after Kornel Misciur was punished but made several great saves.

By Liverpool U21s coach Barry Lewtas’ admission, Liverpool just ‘lacked the final product’ as they came close on multiple occasions.

After a poor clearance from Liverpool goalkeeper Misciur, Yanez controlled the ball around the 18-yard box and volleyed home low, left-footed.

Liverpool had their first chance on the half-hour mark when Rio Ngumoha delivered to Trent Kone-Doherty who could not finish.

On the counter-attack, Jaime Barroso released Liberto Navascues through, but Misciur blocked his effort to keep the score at 0-1.

After some great attacking play from Ngumoha, Michael Laffey attempted a lob, but it was comfortably headed off the line.

In the 48th minute, Ngumoha crossed to Kone-Doherty again, but he headed straight at Alvaro Gonzalez. He should have scored.

Barroso should have doubled the deficit four minutes later, but he mistimed, heading wide of the target from close range.

From yet another Ngumoha cross, the ball reached no.8 Josh Davidson, but he steered wide of the right post.

After the match, manager Barry Lewtas spoke about ‘two good teams’ in an evenly fought contest.

On the match: “Obviously we were frustrated, I felt we were a goal away from really turning the game, overall it was a really good level game and we played our part in it.”

On the group phase situation: “We knew we were going to have to win one or the two, but to be fair we wouldn’t have gone to Girona not trying to win anyway. Over the course of the competition so far I think we’ve really competed and if we play like that we will win more than we lose.”

On Amara Nallo: “I thought Amara was outstanding, stepping in, I thought there were a lot of top moments from him. He’s made huge progress. I thought today he was a standout performer.”
