Liverpool’s summer transfer window is heating up, and while Premier League champions under Arne Slot are in a strong position, recruitment remains a delicate process. David Lynch, speaking to Eddie Gibbs on Anfield Index, provided fascinating insight into Liverpool’s thinking around potential arrivals and departures.
There has been growing speculation around Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, whose contract has just a year left. Lynch clarified the situation, saying, “As far as I’m aware was that there were no talks with Crystal Palace over a move just yet, all talks so far have been with the player side.”
Liverpool clearly see Guehi as an attractive option, with Lynch noting, “There’s definite interest there, but nothing moving just yet although that can change very quickly.” Guehi is seen as “a significant market opportunity,” but interestingly, Liverpool have also been targeting younger defenders, possibly more suited to a fourth-choice role.

Slot and his recruitment team are taking a cautious approach. As Lynch explains, “Whoever comes in is likely going to be that third or fourth choice. Liverpool won’t want to rush into decisions or overpay for any of the options.” If it’s not Guehi, the profile will likely shift entirely, perhaps towards a younger, more developmental signing.
West Ham have shown interest in Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton, but Lynch suggests they are far from the only clubs circling. “I know that those reports have come from the West Ham side but I expect there’s going to be big interest in both players,” he said.
Morton, after a successful loan at Hull City, has attracted interest from Germany and “a couple of English clubs.” Elliott’s list of admirers includes Brighton and Newcastle, which Lynch sees as “no surprise.” While Liverpool may be open to offers, any departures will be carefully weighed, especially with Slot’s system needing depth and versatility across the squad.

Benjamin Sesko has been linked with Liverpool, but Lynch added a dose of realism. “No one at Liverpool have played him down to the point where I think he’s not on the agenda, but I do still think he is a bit raw.” Lynch’s colourful description summed it up perfectly: “If you’re selling Nunez to get someone closer to the finished product, then you’ll be disappointed there. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.”
If Liverpool do decide to bring in a new striker, they are likely to prioritise someone further along in their development. Lynch named Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak as players still on the radar, both offering that extra polish the attack might need.
What stands out most from Lynch’s insights is Liverpool’s clear strategy: no panic, no overspending, and no short-term thinking. Slot’s first season success gives the club a platform of strength, but the focus is on sustainable squad building.
The coming weeks will reveal whether names like Guehi, Ekitike or Isak make the leap from rumour to reality. For now, Liverpool fans can trust that their club is operating with clarity and purpose, balancing ambition with prudence.
