Liverpool have opened direct talks with the representatives of Real Madrid winger Rodrygo as they explore a summer move.
Rodrygo remains under contract until 2028, but his future has become uncertain following the arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick.
Although no formal approach has been made to Madrid, Liverpool’s contact with his representatives is described as ‘serious and ongoing’.
Sources close to the talks believe the Reds are keen to accelerate discussions if Diaz’s expected departure is confirmed.
They are preparing for a busy campaign and view Rodrygo as a high-level addition who can immediately boost their attacking output.
The Brazilian has won two Champions League titles with Madrid and scored 68 goals in 270 appearances across all competitions.
He has been a regular contributor in some of the club’s biggest matches over the past five seasons.
Despite that, his long-term role in Madrid’s evolving attack is unclear, and Liverpool are hoping to capitalise on that uncertainty.
Arsenal have also been linked with Rodrygo but have not made any direct contact in recent days, despite early interest before the Club World Cup.
Their summer business remains focused on finalising a deal for striker Viktor Gyokeres, with the club already spending over £120m on four new signings.
Liverpool have held off on further attacking moves since completing a move for Florian Wirtz, but view Rodrygo as a potential marquee signing.
Barcelona have also shown interest, but their pursuit of Marcus Rashford may reduce their need for another wide forward.
Any move for Rodrygo is likely to cost upwards of £80m, but the potential fee has not deterred Liverpool.
The player previously rejected Liverpool as a teenager when they first made contact in 2017, but circumstances have changed.
