As Liverpool gears up for an exciting encounter against Chelsea Legends this weekend, a sense of nostalgia surrounds the event. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the iconic 2004/05 campaign, Liverpool will reignite their fierce rivalry with Chelsea, a club they faced in a controversial semi-final second leg at Anfield. The clash, which marks two decades since Liverpool’s unforgettable Champions League victory, will see the return of familiar faces from that memorable team.
The 2005 Champions League final, where Liverpool triumphed over AC Milan in one of the most dramatic comebacks in football history, remains a cornerstone of the club’s rich history. The semi-final clash with Chelsea, which Liverpool narrowly won after a contentious second-leg at Anfield, further solidified the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.
This weekend’s legends game will not only commemorate that memorable season but will also serve as a celebration of the players who made it possible. Back in December, the first batch of Liverpool legends was announced, and since then, more names have joined the roster.

The confirmed squad for Liverpool includes several heroes from the 2005 Champions League triumph. Goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, the man who secured Liverpool’s victory in the penalty shootout against Milan, will take part. Alongside him are Djimi Traore, the left-back who played a vital role in that final, and striker Djibril Cissé, whose goals were crucial to the Reds’ success. These three iconic figures from the 2005 final are joined by other stars such as Fabio Aurelio and Robbie Keane, both of whom added invaluable experience to the squad.
Since December, the list of Liverpool legends has continued to grow. Names like Sander Westerveld, Martin Skrtel, Ragnar Klavan, Mark Gonzalez, Jay Spearing, and Dirk Kuyt have all been confirmed. The inclusion of Sami Hyypia, David James, Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Gregory Vignal, Mohamed Sissoko, Igor Biscan, and Florent Sinama Pongolle adds to the squad’s depth, creating a star-studded team of past legends.
Perhaps the most groundbreaking addition to this year’s legends game is Natasha Dowie, who will make history as the first female player to feature in a Liverpool Legends match. Dowie, who is also an ambassador for Liverpool Women, expressed her excitement for the occasion, calling it a “big thing” for both young girls and boys to see female players taking part in such a prestigious event.

Dowie’s inclusion is a historic moment, marking a significant step forward for gender equality in football. “It’s so exciting for us to include female players in this year’s legends game. We’re the first to do this at club level, we are pioneers,” she said. Dowie’s involvement will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of footballers and bring added prestige to an already highly anticipated match.
