The Liverpool Spirit Appeal, launched by the Community Foundation for Merseyside, will distribute money raised to people experiencing ‘physical and/or any subsequent psychological injury’ after the incident, in which a van drove through a packed crowd of supporters attending Liverpool’s city-centre title parade. Of the 79 people injured in the incident, seven remain hospitalised.

Over £50,000 has been raised as of Friday afternoon, with the Jamie Carragher 23 Foundation among the first to donate. The £10,000 donation was matched by Blue Sky, a charity which promotes mental health initiatives for young people. Liverpool supporters’ union Spirit of Shankly made a £5,000 contribution, with various supporters’ groups from around the world also donating.

Carragher’s foundation, formed in 2009, supports young people’s causes worldwide. It focuses in particular on supporting the disadvantaged and disabled, also contributing to food banks, schools, and ‘selected community initiatives’.

Speaking on The Overlap on Friday, Carragher, who spent his entire 25-year playing career at Liverpool, affirmed his support for the injured.

"I'm sure you are aware of the tragic events that happened in Liverpool around their trophy parade," he said. "Everybody here at the Overlap just wants to send their best wishes to everyone involved, and hopefully, fingers crossed, everyone is OK."

Rae Brooke of the Community Foundation thanked Carragher for his support, saying: "Jamie is just amazing, he is always the first to step up. We know just how generous people are in the Liverpool area.

“Our priority is those individuals who were injured in that terrible event. After that, supporting grassroots organisations at a local level who give wellbeing support in the community, a listening ear and will help people try and process what happened that day."
