Liverpool FC Women have named Gareth Taylor as their new head coach, bringing in a manager with a proven history of building successful teams and a commitment to playing attractive, competitive football. At 52, Taylor brings deep experience in the Barclays Women’s Super League and arrives with a reputation shaped by both silverware and a long-standing career in football.
Taylor previously led Manchester City Women, where over five seasons he guided the side to Women’s FA Cup and League Cup glory, along with a narrow miss for the WSL title in 2023-24, where his team finished second only on goal difference. His tenure at City also included significant player development and a strong, recognisable team identity.
Now at the helm of Liverpool Women, Taylor steps into a role with both prestige and promise.
“I am delighted to have been appointed as Liverpool’s new head coach,” said Taylor. “Everyone in football knows about the history, size and potential of this club, and I am really looking forward to the task ahead. Our aim is to create a team that supporters can be proud of, which plays good football and which will hopefully bring success along the way.”

Liverpool Women’s managing director Andy O’Boyle expressed full confidence in the new head coach, highlighting the thorough process that led to Taylor’s appointment.
“This has been a very detailed process and it was clear that Gareth was the outstanding candidate,” O’Boyle said. “He has a proven track record of building successful, identity-driven teams and his ability to develop players and help them reach the next level is second to none. We have a very clear vision of how we will return LFC Women to the upper echelons of the game and this is a crucial step on that journey.”
O’Boyle underlined the importance of maintaining Liverpool’s identity in the women’s game, saying the club will continue to focus on playing “Liverpool football in front of passionate Liverpool fans” and believes Taylor is the ideal figure to lead that effort.
Taylor’s trusted assistant, Chad Gribble, joins him at Liverpool, reinforcing the backroom structure with a strong sense of continuity. Gribble, whose experience includes roles at Exeter City, Doncaster Rovers and Hull City, has been working alongside Taylor since their time at Manchester City.
O’Boyle also praised the contribution of Amber Whiteley, who served as interim head coach after Matt Beard’s departure earlier this year. Whiteley remains with the club as an assistant coach.
“I’d also like to welcome Chad to the club, someone whose previous experience with Gareth can prove invaluable,” said O’Boyle. “And I’d like to thank Amber for the excellent work she did alongside the rest of the coaching team in the final few months of last season.”
Taylor has already begun working with the Liverpool Women squad as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. His first test will come in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa this Saturday at Bodymoor Heath Training Ground.
Fans will be watching closely as a new era begins under Taylor’s leadership. With experience, ambition and alignment with the club’s values, the future of Liverpool Women looks poised for growth.
