Liverpool will make the signing of Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo their focus if Mohamed Salah does not agree a new deal at Anfield.

Salah’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and there has been no announcement on an extension.

The Egypt international is the leading scorer and assist provider in the Premier League this season, but will be a free agent in the summer as things stand.

While optimism at Liverpool remains that a new contract can be agreed, clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia are monitoring the 32-year-old’s situation closely.

Spanish outlet Fichajes are reporting that Liverpool are making contingency plans should Salah leave. Top of the club’s list of potential replacements is Kubo, with the Reds having held a long-standing interest in the Japan international.

The 23-year-old has seven goals and four assists for Real Sociedad this season and ranks among La Liga’s top players for fouls drawn (3rd), successful take-ons (7th) and progressive carries (6th).

Like Salah, he features predominantly on the right-wing with a preference for coming inside on his stronger left foot. Kubo, who joined Sociedad from Real Madrid in 2022, is understood to have a release clause of €60m (£51m) in his contract in San Sebastien.

At international level, Kubo is a teammate of Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo and has scored six goals in 42 caps for the national team. During the international break, he helped Japan become the first team to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup next summer.
