Liverpool is a city that lives and breathes football, but it is also a city that remembers its own with heart and soul. In the wake of the heartbreaking loss of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, Liverpool Football Club has laid the foundations for a tribute that will endure for generations. It is a legacy shaped not only by grief but also by deep respect, admiration and a powerful sense of unity.
From the moment news broke of the tragic passing of Diogo and André, Anfield became more than a stadium. It turned into a sacred place of remembrance. Fans arrived in their thousands, bearing flowers, scarves, paintings, letters, banners and even shirts from rival teams. Each gesture, no matter how small, carried the weight of emotion and solidarity.
Liverpool’s players, staff and the families of the brothers stood together in mourning. This was not simply a loss to the footballing world but a deeply personal one for all connected to the club.

In consultation with Diogo’s family, Liverpool has confirmed the retirement of the number 20 shirt. This decision spans the entire club structure, from the men’s first team to LFC Women and the Academy. It is a rare and meaningful move, one that underlines the significance of Diogo’s time at Liverpool and the respect he earned on and off the pitch.
Temporary tributes have now been carefully removed, respectfully sorted and stored. The club has chosen a thoughtful and environmentally conscious path forward. All floral tributes will be composted and used to nourish flower beds at Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and the AXA Melwood Training Centre, allowing the memory of Diogo and André to live on in places that shaped their journey.
Other items will be recycled and repurposed by a specialist company into a permanent sculpture. This piece will stand at Anfield, offering a quiet space for reflection and remembrance, a place where supporters can come to honour Diogo Jota in years to come.
Supporters who wish to pay tribute can now request ‘Diogo J. 20’ printed on the back of their shirt in-store or online, with all profits directed to the LFC Foundation. In partnership with the Foundation, the club is launching a grassroots football programme in Diogo’s name, planting the seeds of inspiration for future generations of young footballers.
Pre-season matches will also provide moments of remembrance. Floral tributes will be laid in Hong Kong, Tokyo and at Anfield. Players will wear shirts marked with a special ‘Diogo J. 20’ patch, and new kits, launching on 1 August, will feature a ‘Forever 20’ emblem across shirts and jackets for the entire 2025/26 season.
The opening Premier League fixture at Anfield against AFC Bournemouth on 15 August will serve as a significant moment of reflection. A minute’s silence and a special fan mosaic are planned as part of a club-wide act of remembrance. Full details will follow in due course.
Liverpool FC has extended its gratitude to all who have paid tribute and supported the club during this difficult time. In the words and symbols that now shape this memorial, one truth rings loud and clear: Diogo Jota’s impact will never be forgotten.
