Liverpool manager Arne Slot does not believe that Crystal Palace should have been awarded a penalty on Saturday.

The Reds came away from Selhurst Park with a 1-0 win thanks to Diogo Jota’s first-half finish, keeping them top of the Premier League table heading into the international break.

The hosts, however, were denied a penalty in the second half. Virgil van Dijk appeared to hold onto Marc Guehi’s arm as he made an effort to get to the ball in the box, but referee Simon Hooper did not deem it a foul.

The incident was reviewed by the VAR, who confirmed the decision, “deeming that the challenge was not sustained holding and had no impact on the play,” according to the Premier League Match Centre.

“The ball is going to the goalkeeper,” Slot told TNT Sports after the final whistle. “If he [referee] had given this one then VAR wouldn’t have changed it. It is not a penalty for me as he [Guehi] wouldn’t ever get the ball.”

Liverpool have now won six of their opening seven league games, making Slot a very happy man as his players head off for international duty.

“Mostly for me it’s special,” the Dutchman said on maintaining their place on top of the standings.

“Players go to their national team and they think of the national team, but for me if I lose it is three to four days of being unhappy. I think my wife will be happy as she will have someone home who is happy.

“Really satisfied with how we started the season. It is a good start not only the results, but I liked our performance today.

“There was a period of the game we conceded free-kicks and that was a difficult period. For the last 10 minutes we kept the ball very well.”
