Ligue 1 has not planned for breaks during matches for Ramadan | OneFootball

Following reports that Premier League referees had been asked to pause matches to allow Muslim players to break their fast during Ramadan on sunset, L’Équipe indicate this morning that no such measure has been requested in the case of the French top flight.

For the time being, no Ligue 1 club has submitted a request to the league authorities, and as a result the subject has not been addressed yet – but it could be during the international break, given that the Islamic holy month began yesterday.

Earlier today, L’Équipe had also reported that the French national team players who intended to observe Ramadan would be delaying the start of their fast by five days, until the end of their commitments with Les Bleus. The France staff had recommended that the players do so – but not forced them.

Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kanté, who are absent from Les Bleus’ team this month having only recently recovered from injury, were among the senior players to have fasted during World Cup preparations five years ago, as well as during the Euro 2016, going against the staff’s advice.

This time, there are reportedly few Muslim players in the squad for France’s first two games of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. In yesterday’s press conference, forward Marcus Thuram had welcomed the decision to allow for breaks during matches in England – “It’s a step forward, it’s only the beginning.”
