United's pass completion gives Hull City evidence as to how they can succeed against the Bluebirds

Tim Walter's play-style as Hull City head coach is certainly an intriguing watch.

The 48-year-old has continued to probe with the methods which made his Hamburg SV side a force in Germany's 2.Bundesliga throughout his tenure at the Volksparkstadion, albeit promotion back to the German top flight managed to allude 'Die Rothausen' prior to his dismissal in February.

There was a genuine excitement about those methods translating into English football, and whilst they are certainly unique, it has taken his new-look Hull squad a fair amount of time to adapt to what has been described by German journalists as 'Heart-Attack Football'.

However, based off evidence from City's second-half performance in the 3-1 victory over Stoke City on Friday, and metrics from their upcoming opponents - Cardiff City - who suffered a 2-0 defeat against Leeds United, forcing the swift decision to part ways with Erol Bulut, will give Walter and his team even more confidence that a first home win of the season can be achieved.

Leeds United metrics vs Cardiff City will give Hull City further optimism

Leeds' away performance at the Cardiff City Stadium last weekend will breed further confidence for Walter's men, as the Bluebirds once again failed to get anywhere near their opponents across the entire 90 minutes.

And, when taking into account that Hull will look to end their home hoodoo, it could be a profitable afternoon for the Tigers.

As well as goals from Largie Ramazani and Joel Piroe, United were more than effective in terms of chance creation and ball retention against the side cropping up the Championship standings, which Walter will be hoping to form the basis of a similar game-plan from with his own high-octane, possession-heavy ideologies.

Although Cardiff were reduced to 10 men through Joel Bagan's 23rd minute dismissal, Leeds were streets ahead of their hosts, who failed to live with Daniel Farke's side as they racked up a total of 779 passes throughout the encounter - 696 of which were accurate as they played their way through on several occasions, making 75 final-third entries in comparison to Cardiff's 33.

This also led to 37 touches within Cardiff's penalty area throughout the game, with Piroe's match-clincher on 87 minutes being one of those.

Unsurprisingly, given their league position and early-season goal difference of -12, maintaining possession and having control of a game has bypassed the South Wales outfit on numerous occasions in the first six games, losing the ball on an average of 127.3 times per 90 minutes, which has had a major impact on subsequently conceding 2.2 goals per game.

Hull City must build on second half display vs Stoke City

It's hardly an outlandish statement to say that the second period at the Bet365 which sparked the Tigers' comeback was the best showing we have seen from Walter's men, as they retained possession consistently and were extremely tenacious in their high press.

This was fronted by Liam Millar and Cody Drameh on the left-hand side, with the Canadian doing more than enough to earn a starting berth against Cardiff after providing Regan Slater with the second of Hull's three goals, as well as registering a further key pass in his 45-minute cameo.

Hull registered 25 final third entries in the second half against Narcis Pelach's new chargers, causing plenty of havoc in midfield and wide areas, and they will hope to emulate the prior joy which the likes of Ramazani and Wilfried Gnonto had against the Bluebirds in last weekend's clash.

Of course, Walter mustn't allow for complacency to set in after the Tigers registered their maiden success of the season, but if they are to enjoy the lions' share of possession and utilise the MKM Stadium crowd to their advantage, many outsiders would fancy the Tigers to secure a first home victory since April 13th.
