The Whites are considering a move for River Plate goalkeeper Conan Ledesma in January.
Leeds United are considering making a move for River Plate goalkeeper Conan Ledesma as a replacement for Illan Meslier during the January transfer window, as reported by Spanish outlet Fichajes.
French shot-stopper Meslier has come under fierce criticism in Yorkshire for a number of costly mistakes during the course of the Championship season so far, with his latest error in a 3-3 draw with Hull City seemingly the final straw for Daniel Farke.
The Whites still sit top at the Championship summit, but Meslier’s errors leading directly to goals has cost Leeds seven points so far this term, which would have given them a healthy lead for a return to the Premier League if they hadn’t been made.
As this could prove to be crucial come the end of the season to their promotion hopes, Leeds are reportedly ready to act during this window and recruit a more reliable and experienced goalkeeper to ease the anxiety they currently face in between the sticks.
According to Fichajes, replacements are now being considered in the event of Illan Meslier’s departure, and River Plate keeper Conan Ledesma is high on Leeds’ shortlist.
While the report indicates negotiations between the two parties are “not yet closed”, the phrasing suggests the Whites have discussed terms of the deal but are yet to reach an agreement, but it appears talks will develop and intensify the longer January progresses.
The 31-year-old Ledesma seems keen on a new challenge too, with the Argentine unable to displace current River Plate number one Franco Armani in their starting XI.
However, Ledesma was a key player for Cadiz in La Liga before returning to his native land, racking up over 100 appearances, and at 31, has impressive experience playing at the top level of Spanish football.
After showing his ability while in Spain, Ledesma will be keen to show what he can do again with regular first-team minutes, which has the potential to push the confidence-ridden Meslier towards the exit door at Elland Road.
With consistent mistakes made to cost Leeds points this term, Meslier will be concerned that his spell at Elland Road may be at a near end with these latest rumours.
The Whites could have been in a much more comfortable position at the top of the table with a more reliable number one, and Ledesma’s credentials at Cadiz make him a top candidate to solidify the backline.
Alongside the mistakes, Meslier’s confidence is sure to be shattered given how many errors he is making and opting for a bit more experience in the goalkeeper position could be the difference to securing promotion back to the Premier League.
A goalkeeper is such a crucial player to developing the metal of a defence in order to shut teams out, and Leeds must make this decision quickly to avoid surrendering top spot.
